Tyre Update

I've been using Schwalbe Marathon Pluses for a few months now (switching from the original Kojaks), so I thought it was time for an update.

Since moving house there isn't anywhere near as much broken glass around on my commute, so it may not be a an entirely fair comparison, but nonetheless I've been puncture free since switching tyres.

The Marathon Pluses do seem to have very slightly more rolling resistance than the Kojaks. I'm not sure if that is due to the make-up of the tyre or just that they can't be inflated to as high a pressure as the Kojaks.

However, given that I cycle to get to work and back, and to get some exercise, the slight increase in pedalling effort is more than made up for by the extra reliability.

  1. Woo!
Finally an update regarding the tires.
I was looking to get the "Plus" tires, but reading sheldon Browns website, he states that the slick tires seem to be the way to go (if you don't live in glass city)

Plus, it's a very interesting website.

  2. I agree, Sheldon's site is a wealth of interesting information.
If I could guarantee no glass on my route I'd probably go back to the Kojak's as they are slightly faster. However my main priority is reliability and I don't mind a small increase in weight and rolling resistance to get it. You may well want to make a different trade-off :)

  3. First of all Dan can I say I love your Brompton posts. I have exactly the same model as yours in bright Orange. I run on Brompton green tyres at 100psi front and back and have so far found them incredibly reliable. They seem to run nice and smoothly too but i may run some Kojaks next summer just to see how they feel. I noted your post on frame stickers and will now take the advice thanks to your experiences.

  4. Hi Vern, thanks for the information on the Brompton tyres, I wonder how they'll compare to the Kojaks? I'm glad you're enjoying the posts, make sure you read the most recent post on stickers as the older one is a little out of date now.

Mini-update on the Marathon Pluses - still no punctures, rear tyre is starting to look a little worn (front tyre less so) so may need replacing in a few more months.
